Scot Webster (UL)
Designing a Lean Laboratory
Senior Vice President for Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Scot Webster
joined UL in 2008 after 6 years at Medtronic as its Vice President of Quality,
designing and deploying their Lean Sigma initiative; then expanding his role
to VP of Global Business Solutions, and overseeing facilities, customer
centers, compliance, supply chain, as well as Lean Sigma. Before joining
Medtronic, Scot held various engineering and operations management
positions during his 21 years with GE. Scot helped develop and teach both
Lean and Six Sigma and was one of GE’s first Certified Master Black Belts.
As the Global Engineering and Lab Operations leader during Scot’s first 4
years at UL, he provided the engineering judgment and directed laboratory testing of over 150,000
projects per year at over 50 locations. Applying lean systems thinking within UL’s laboratory and
service industry, the team cut turnaround times in half and improved customer net promoter
scores over 30 points.
Currently the leader of UL’s Enterprise Service’s Lean Business Division, Scot helps clients
transform people and processes to champion UL’s mission of promoting safe living and working
environments. Additionally, Scot is responsible for Lean Sigma application throughout UL. He
is a member of the President’s Council of the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, and
graduated from Bucknell University with a BS in Chemical Engineering.
